Malik Kafur also known as “Hazar Dinari” was bought by whom ?
Nusrat Khan
Malik Kafur was purchased by Nusrat Khan — option 3.
Where the title comes from. Hazar Dinari means “of a thousand dinars”, the price paid for him. During Alauddin Khalji’s campaign against Gujarat in 1299, led by Ulugh Khan and Nusrat Khan Jalesari, the port of Khambhat (Cambay) was sacked. Nusrat Khan bought the slave Kafur there for a thousand dinars and sent him to the Sultan — which is why the purchaser is Nusrat Khan and not Alauddin himself, the point on which this question turns.
| Person | Role in the story |
|---|---|
| Alauddin Khalji | Sultan of Delhi, 1296–1316; he received Kafur and later raised him to be Malik Naib, but did not buy him |
| Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq | Founder of the Tughlaq dynasty in 1320, four years after Alauddin’s death — no connection at all |
| Nusrat Khan | Alauddin’s commander, who bought Kafur at Khambhat in 1299 for a thousand dinars |
What Kafur went on to do. He rose to become Malik Naib, the deputy of the empire, and commanded the expeditions that took Khalji power into the far south, which no northern ruler had done before. He defeated Ramachandra of Devagiri, Prataparudra of Warangal, the Hoysala ruler Vira Ballala III at Dwarasamudra, and reached Madurai in the Pandya country in 1311, returning with an immense treasure that included, by tradition, the Koh-i-noor. After Alauddin’s death in 1316 he attempted to control the succession, but was killed within weeks by the Sultan’s bodyguards.
Why option 4 fails. Only one person bought him, so “more than one of the above” cannot apply.
Hence, the answer is Nusrat Khan.
