Mahatma Jotirao Phule's writings and efforts of social reforms touched issues of almost all subaltern classes. Discuss.
Mahatma Jotirao Phule was a pioneering social reformer whose work was remarkable for its wide-ranging and inclusive approach, addressing the grievances of nearly all marginalized sections of society. His efforts were not confined to a single issue but formed a cohesive critique of the traditional hierarchical social structure.
For women, who were among the most oppressed, Phule championed the cause of education. In 1848, he, along with his wife Savitribai Phule, started the first school for girls in Pune. He vehemently opposed child marriage and supported widow remarriage, challenging patriarchal norms that subjugated women.
His most powerful crusade was against the caste system and the dominance of the Brahminical order. Through his seminal work, Gulamgiri (Slavery), he exposed the exploitative nature of caste hierarchies. In 1873, he founded the Satyashodhak Samaj (Society of Truth Seekers) to attain equal rights for the so-called lower castes, the Shudras and Ati-Shudras. The Samaj aimed to liberate them from social and religious bondage, promoting rational thought and rejecting ritualistic dominance.
Phule also addressed the plight of the peasantry and working class. In his book, Shetkaryacha Asud (The Cultivator’s Whipcord), he detailed the exploitation of farmers by landlords and the colonial bureaucracy. By interconnecting the struggles of women, lower castes, and peasants, Phule’s reform movement created a truly comprehensive and powerful voice for the subaltern masses of his time.
