India has immense potential of solar energy though there are regional variations in its development. Elaborate
India is endowed with immense solar energy potential, a direct benefit of its geographical location in the tropics. The country receives high solar insolation for over 300 days a year, making solar power a reliable and abundant resource to fuel its energy transition. The government has recognised this potential through ambitious initiatives like the National Solar Mission and the International Solar Alliance, aiming to make India a global leader in solar energy. This potential is key to achieving energy security, mitigating climate change, and providing electricity to remote areas.
However, the development of this potential is marked by significant regional variations. The western and southern states have emerged as frontrunners. States like Rajasthan and Gujarat are ideal for large-scale solar parks due to their vast, arid, and sun-drenched landscapes. They lead the country in installed capacity, benefiting from favourable policies and high solar radiation. Similarly, states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh have also made significant strides.
In contrast, development is much slower in other regions. The northeastern states, despite having potential, face challenges like hilly terrain, higher cloud cover during monsoons, and land acquisition issues. The densely populated Gangetic plains also lag, partly due to the high value of land for agriculture, making large solar farms less feasible.
Therefore, while India's overall solar potential is massive, harnessing it effectively requires a regionally-differentiated strategy, promoting not just large solar parks in ideal locations but also decentralized solutions like rooftop solar in urban and land-scarce areas.
