The Planning Commission of India was set up in March 1950 by a resolution of the Government of India to formulate the country's Five-Year Plans and allocate resources for planned development.
It was a non-constitutional and non-statutory advisory body headed by the Prime Minister as its chairman.
In January 2015 it was dissolved and replaced by the NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India), which adopted a more cooperative, federal approach to planning.
Hence, the Planning Commission was established in 1950.
