The correct answer is

(s)

This is a double displacement reaction between sodium sulphate and barium chloride in aqueous solution.

The ions exchange partners, and barium sulphate (BaSO4) is formed. Barium sulphate is highly insoluble in water and separates out as a white precipitate.

Since a precipitate is an insoluble solid that settles out of the solution, its physical state is solid, denoted by (s).

The sodium chloride formed stays dissolved and remains aqueous (aq).

Hence, the state that replaces (*) is solid, written as (s).
