Question

In the indexed scheme of blocks to a file, the maximum possible size of the file depends on :

UGC NET 2015 Paper 1 Question Paper (27-Dec-2015)
The correct answer is

The number of blocks used for index and the size of index

In indexed allocation all block addresses of a file are kept in index blocks, so the file can only have as many data blocks as there are index entries available.

The number of entries depends on how many blocks are used for the index and how large each index is, so these two together limit the largest file.

Block size or address size alone, or only the size of a single index, do not fix the total because the index may span several blocks.

Thus the maximum file size is governed by the count of index blocks together with the index size.

Hence, The number of blocks used for index and the size of index.
