Question

In __________ allocation method for disk block allocation in a file system, insertion and deletion of blocks in a file is easy.

This question was previously asked in
UGC NET 2015 Paper 1 Question Paper (27-Dec-2015)
The correct answer is

Linked

In linked allocation each block of a file holds a pointer to the next block, so the file is a linked list of blocks scattered anywhere on the disk.

Adding or removing a block only requires changing pointers, without moving any other block.

Contiguous allocation needs free space next to the file and may require moving data, indexed allocation must update the index block, and a bit map is a free-space management method, not an allocation method.

So insertion and deletion are easiest with linked allocation.

Hence, Linked.
