Question

If 5 workers, working at the same rate, complete a job in 12 days, how many days will 10 workers take to complete the same job?

The correct answer is

6 days

The job is fixed in size, so more workers finish sooner: the number of workers and the days taken are inversely proportional.

Measure the fixed job as total effort in worker-days: \(5\ \text{workers}\times12\ \text{days}=60\ \text{worker-days}\).

The same 60 worker-days must now be shared among 10 workers.

So the days required are \(\dfrac{60}{10}=6\ \text{days}\).

The logic is confirmed by proportion: doubling the workforce from 5 to 10 halves the time from 12 to 6 days.

Answers like 5 or 10 days ignore the inverse relationship, and 12 days would mean the extra workers did nothing.

Hence, the answer is 6 days.
