Evaluate the policies of Lord Curzon and their long term implications on the national movement.
Lord Curzon, an arch-imperialist, aimed to strengthen the British Raj through administrative efficiency. However, his policies, driven by a dismissive attitude towards Indian aspirations, had the long-term implication of galvanizing the national movement.
His most consequential act was the Partition of Bengal (1905). While officially for administrative ease, it was a clear attempt to 'divide and rule' by separating the Hindu and Muslim populations. This move backfired spectacularly, triggering the mass-based Swadeshi Movement. It fostered new techniques of protest like boycott and passive resistance, which were later adopted by Gandhi.
The partition also fueled the rise of extremist nationalism and deepened the political consciousness of the masses. Curzon’s attempts to control universities and municipalities further alienated the educated Indian middle class. Ironically, his efforts to secure British dominance ended up uniting Indians and accelerating their march towards freedom.
