The cyclone 'Hudhud' hit the coast of which State?

UGC NET 2014 Paper 3 Electronic Science Question Paper (28-Dec-2014)
The correct answer is

Andhra Pradesh

Cyclone Hudhud made landfall on the coast of Andhra Pradesh, near Visakhapatnam, on 12 October 2014, a few months before this paper was set.

It formed in the Andaman Sea, intensified as it moved north westwards across the Bay of Bengal, and struck as a very severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of around 175 to 185 kilometres per hour. Visakhapatnam bore the worst of it: the port city suffered extensive damage to buildings, power lines and its airport, and the storm caused more than a hundred deaths across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, along with heavy losses to standing crops. Large scale evacuation carried out in advance on the basis of cyclone warnings is credited with keeping the death toll far lower than it might have been.

The name Hudhud comes from the hoopoe bird and was contributed by Oman under the naming system for cyclones in the north Indian Ocean, in which member countries supply names in rotation.

The geography settles the other options. Karnataka and Kerala lie on the west coast, facing the Arabian Sea, so a Bay of Bengal cyclone could not make landfall there. Gujarat also faces the Arabian Sea and is affected by cyclones from that side, such as Cyclone Ockhi and later storms. The east coast states - Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal - are the ones exposed to Bay of Bengal systems, and the Bay generates the large majority of the cyclones that strike India.

Hence Cyclone Hudhud hit the coast of Andhra Pradesh.
