Customs and traditions suppress reason leading to obscurantism. Do you agree?

The statement that customs and traditions suppress reason, leading to obscurantism, holds significant truth, but it is not an absolute one. The relationship between tradition and reason is complex, and a blanket agreement would oversimplify the role traditions play in society.

I agree that many customs have indeed suppressed reason and perpetuated obscurantism. History is replete with examples. The practice of Sati, the rigidities of the caste system, the prohibition of widow remarriage, and various superstitions were all defended in the name of tradition. These customs denied basic human dignity and rights, actively discouraging rational inquiry and critical thought. Social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar had to wage immense battles against these entrenched traditions by appealing to reason and a more humane interpretation of scriptures. In these cases, tradition clearly acted as a force of regression and oppression.

However, to claim all traditions suppress reason is incorrect. Many traditions and customs provide a framework for social cohesion, identity, and ethical values. Festivals like Diwali or Eid foster a sense of community and sharing. Traditional practices of respecting elders or a reverence for nature often contain accumulated wisdom. These traditions are not inherently anti-reason; they serve a social or psychological function.

Therefore, the key is not to reject tradition wholesale but to apply the filter of reason to it. Reason should be the tool to evaluate customs, helping us to discard those that are harmful, discriminatory, and obscurantist, while retaining or adapting those that enrich our social fabric and promote positive values. Tradition without reason can be dangerous, but a society without any tradition can be rootless.
