Apical dominance. The terminal bud produces the hormone auxin, which travels down the stem and suppresses the axillary buds below it. Gardeners exploit this constantly, and it is the reason a hedge is clipped rather than left to grow.
Why buds matter practically. The “eyes” of a potato tuber are buds, which is how potato is propagated; grafting and budding in horticulture transfer a bud of a desired variety onto a hardy rootstock; and in temperate trees the winter is passed as dormant scale-covered buds that open in spring.
