Why (A) is true. A transducer's raw output is almost never in a form a display can use directly:

Signal conditioning therefore covers amplification, filtering, linearisation, isolation and conversion to a standard transmission form — classically the 4 to 20 mA current loop, which is immune to voltage drop along the cable and whose non-zero minimum distinguishes a genuine zero reading from a broken wire. Standardising on such an interface is exactly what lets an off-the-shelf indicator work with any sensor, and custom electronics are built only when no standard interface fits.

Why (R) is true. The definition is correct: a transducer converts energy from one form to another — temperature, pressure, displacement or light into an electrical quantity in the usual case, and the reverse for an output transducer such as a loudspeaker or an actuator.

But the definition does not explain the practice. Knowing what a transducer is tells us nothing about why standard conditioners are preferred to custom-built ones. That preference rests on economics and interchangeability — standard modules are cheaper, replaceable and interoperable — and on the fact that most sensor outputs, though weak and awkward, can be brought to a common form. The reason would explain the assertion only if it said something like "because transducer outputs are weak and vary widely in form", which it does not. So the two statements stand independently.

The answer is flagged for confirmation because a lenient reading — "energy is converted, therefore some conversion electronics are needed" — would make (R) explanatory.

The full measurement chain is worth having in mind: transducer → signal conditioner → transmission → display or recorder → controller. Each block has its own standards, and it is precisely that modularity which allows a thermocouple and a pressure sensor to feed the same panel meter.

Hence, both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).
