Question

A shopkeeper sold 5/8 of his articles at a gain of 20% and the remaining at the cost price. What is his gain percentage in the whole transaction?

The correct answer is

12 1/2%

Let the total number of articles be x. So, the number of articles sold at a gain of 20% = 5x/8, and the number of articles sold at cost price = 3x/8.

Cost price of 5x/8 articles = (5x/8) * (Cost price per article)

Selling price of 5x/8 articles = (5x/8) * (Cost price per article * 1.2) = 1.2 * (5x/8) * (Cost price per article)

For the remaining 3x/8 articles, the selling price is equal to the cost price.

The total gain = (Total selling price) - (Total cost price) = (Selling price of 5x/8 articles) + (Selling price of 3x/8 articles) - (Cost price of total x articles).

After calculation, the overall gain percentage is 12 1/2%.
