Khilji Dynasty - NCERT Medieval India UPSC Notes

The second dynasty to enter and rule over the Delhi Sultanate was the Khilji Dynasty. Hailing from Central Asia, their entry marked the end of monopolization of power and racial dictatorship by Ilbari Turks. They were known to have adopted the Khura Sanian's urbane culture and certain Afghan customs and social traditions from Ghaznavids.

That is one of the reasons why the court of Khiljis was of multi-ethnical background with people of Persian, Indian, Arab and Turkish origin. One prominent result of their rule was the widening of the social base of the ruling class. FAQs

FAQs

Question: Who was the founder of the Khilji dynasty, and what was his role in the establishment of the dynasty?

Answer: The Khilji dynasty was founded by Jalal-ud-Din Khilji in 1290. He was a military commander who rose through the ranks and took control of the Delhi Sultanate after the assassination of the previous ruler. Jalal-ud-Din's rule marked the beginning of the Khilji dynasty, which would later be known for its military conquests and administrative reforms. His reign, however, was relatively peaceful compared to his successors, and he is often remembered for establishing a foundation for the dynasty’s later expansion under his nephew, Alauddin Khilji.

Question: What are the key contributions of Alauddin Khilji during his reign?

Answer: Alauddin Khilji, the most famous ruler of the Khilji dynasty, is best known for his military campaigns and administrative reforms. His key contributions include:

  • Expanding the Delhi Sultanate through successful military campaigns in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and the Deccan region.
  • Implementing a price control system to stabilize the economy and prevent inflation, especially during times of war.
  • Introducing several military reforms, including the creation of a professional standing army and a well-organized intelligence network.
  • Strengthening the central administration and establishing a stronghold over the nobility and military commanders.
Alauddin’s reign marked the zenith of the Khilji dynasty’s power, although it was also characterized by high-handedness and authoritarianism.

Question: What was the significance of Alauddin Khilji's military campaigns in Rajasthan and Gujarat?

Answer: Alauddin Khilji's military campaigns in Rajasthan and Gujarat were significant for several reasons:

  • In Rajasthan, Alauddin faced fierce resistance from Rajput rulers, particularly from the kingdoms of Mewar and Chittor. His campaigns in these regions were intended to expand his empire and assert his authority over the Rajputs.
  • In Gujarat, his campaigns were aimed at securing strategic trade routes and expanding his territorial influence. His conquest of Gujarat in 1299 led to the annexation of the region, which brought considerable wealth to the Delhi Sultanate.
  • These military campaigns also showcased Alauddin’s organizational and strategic capabilities, making the Khilji dynasty a dominant power in medieval India.
The successful expansion of the Delhi Sultanate during his reign marked an important phase in the history of northern India.

Question: How did the Khilji dynasty impact the socio-economic structure of India during its rule?

Answer: The Khilji dynasty had a profound impact on the socio-economic structure of India. The reign of Alauddin Khilji, in particular, brought significant changes:

  • One of the most notable reforms was the introduction of the market control system. Alauddin Khilji implemented price regulations for essential commodities, such as food grains, cloth, and horses. This was aimed at stabilizing the economy and curbing the hoarding of goods.
  • His policies helped in the redistribution of wealth and ensured that essential commodities were available to common people at reasonable prices, though this also led to increased taxation and financial burden on peasants.
  • Additionally, the Khilji dynasty promoted trade, particularly through the establishment of trade links with Central Asia and the Middle East. This encouraged economic growth but also concentrated wealth in the hands of the elites.
These reforms and their effects created a mixed socio-economic legacy of both progress and exploitation during the Khilji period.

Question: What led to the decline of the Khilji dynasty?

Answer: The decline of the Khilji dynasty was primarily due to a combination of internal and external factors:

  • After the death of Alauddin Khilji in 1316, the empire suffered from a lack of strong leadership. His successors were weak, and infighting within the royal family further destabilized the state.
  • The administrative reforms introduced by Alauddin were difficult to maintain, and corruption among the bureaucracy increased over time.
  • The empire also faced external threats from the Mongols, who repeatedly invaded the northern regions. These invasions drained resources and weakened the empire's ability to defend itself.
The combination of ineffective rulers, internal disintegration, and external invasions led to the eventual fall of the Khilji dynasty by 1320, when it was replaced by the Tughlaq dynasty.

GS Mains Questions and Model Answers

Q1: Evaluate the military reforms introduced by Alauddin Khilji. How did these reforms impact the strength of the Delhi Sultanate?

Answer: Alauddin Khilji introduced several military reforms that enhanced the strength of the Delhi Sultanate. These included the establishment of a professional standing army, which was supported by a well-organized intelligence network. The introduction of a centralized recruitment system and the provision of salaries in cash, instead of land grants, ensured a more disciplined and efficient army. These reforms allowed the Khilji dynasty to launch successful campaigns against Rajput kingdoms and expand the empire’s borders. Additionally, the strategic use of spies and intelligence networks allowed him to preempt threats and maintain control over his vast territory. These reforms had a lasting impact on the military structure of the Delhi Sultanate.

Q2: Discuss the economic policies of Alauddin Khilji. How did they affect the society and economy of medieval India?

Answer: Alauddin Khilji’s economic policies, particularly his market control system, had a profound impact on medieval India. By implementing price controls on essential commodities such as food grains and horses, he aimed to stabilize the economy and reduce inflation during times of war. These policies were designed to ensure that essential goods remained affordable for the common people, but they also led to significant taxation and financial pressure on the peasantry. His focus on military funding through revenue from land and agricultural produce reshaped the economic landscape, concentrating wealth in the hands of the state. While these measures were effective in stabilizing the economy during his reign, they also led to exploitation and resentment among the lower classes.

Q3: Analyze the role of Alauddin Khilji’s conquests in shaping the political and cultural landscape of India.

Answer: Alauddin Khilji’s military conquests significantly altered the political and cultural landscape of medieval India. His expansionist policies resulted in the annexation of key regions such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, and parts of the Deccan. These conquests not only strengthened the Delhi Sultanate’s position but also brought considerable wealth and resources to the empire. Culturally, Khilji's rule saw an influx of Central Asian and Persian influences, which blended with indigenous Indian traditions. This fusion resulted in a distinctive cultural identity, seen in the architecture and art of the period. However, his conquests also led to widespread destruction of temples and cultural monuments, especially in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Despite the destruction, his reign marked the zenith of the Khilji dynasty’s political power.
