The Combined Medical Services official notification will be released on July 27, 2020. Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the revised dates of the CMS exam which is scheduled to be conducted on October 22, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are the highlights related to the exam pattern and syllabus of the UPSC CMS exam:

  • UPSC CMS Exam 2020 exam is conducted in two parts.
  • Part I consists of two written papers – Paper 1 & Paper 2 of 250 marks each.
  • Part II consists of the Personality Test/Interview. It carries 100 marks.
  • The Paper-I consists of 2 parts - General Medicine & Paediatrics
  • The Paper-II consists of Surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Preventive Social & Community Medicine

UPSC CMS 2020 Exam Pattern

As per the UPSC 2020 official notification, there are 2 stages to get recruited. Part-I is a Computer Based Test and Part-II is a personality Test. Here is the detailed pattern about the 2 parts

UPSC CMS 2020 - Exam Pattern of Computer Based Test

  • Both the papers of CMS will be as per MBBS Standards and difficulty level.
  • Both papers will consist of MCQ questions having 4 options.
  • Both papers will have equal weightage in the final merit list.

Exam Pattern of Paper-I

  • It is an MCQ examination, Each Question will have 4 options.
  • The Total Number of questions asked are 120 for total marks of 250
  • Negative Marking is applicable 1/3rd Mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.
  • If two or more answers are given by the candidate, it will be considered as the wrong answer and negative marking is applicable even if one of the options is correct.
  • There is no negative marking for unanswered questions.

Exam Pattern of Paper-II

  • It is an MCQ examination, Each Question will have 4 options.
  • The Total Number of questions asked are 120, 40 questions from each of the sections given above. The total number of marks of the examination is 250 marks.
  • The Commission has set the time limit for UPSC CMS 2020 is 2 hours.
  • Negative Marking is applicable 1/3rd Mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.
  • If two or more answers are given by the candidate, it will be considered as the wrong answer and negative marking is applicable even if one of the options is correct.
  • There is no negative marking for unanswered questions.

UPSC CMS 2020 - Exam Pattern of Personality Test

  • The candidates who will qualify the Part I CBT examination, are eligible for the Part II examination.
  • The Part II examination is the Personality Test.
  • The Personality/Interview Test will be for 100 marks which will be taken by the UPSC Officials.
  • The interview/personality test will be intended to serve as a supplement to the computer-based examination for testing the General knowledge and field of study of the candidate in the academics and also the officials test the Capability of leadership, initiative, character, alertness, Ability for social cohesion, Balance of judgement and candidates intellectual curiosity.
