Archaeological surveys of the Vijayanagara capital at Hampi show that extensive agricultural tracts, irrigated by canals drawn from the Tungabhadra river, were enclosed within its massive fortification walls. This was primarily a defensive measure so that the city could withstand a prolonged siege by an invading army without depending on food supplies from outside the walls.
