Who was the first Muslim President of Indian National Congress ?
Badruddin Taiyabji
Badruddin Tyabji was the first Muslim President of the Congress — option 2.
The session. He presided over the third session, at Madras in 1887, only two years after the Congress was founded. A Bombay barrister — the first Indian barrister of the Bombay High Court, and later a judge of it — he was among the founders of the organisation, and his election was a deliberate signal that the Congress was not a body of one community.
| Session | Year | President |
|---|---|---|
| 1st, Bombay | 1885 | W. C. Bonnerjee — the first President |
| 2nd, Calcutta | 1886 | Dadabhai Naoroji |
| 3rd, Madras | 1887 | Badruddin Tyabji — first Muslim President |
| 4th, Allahabad | 1888 | George Yule — first English President |
What he did in the chair. Sayyid Ahmad Khan was at that time urging Muslims to keep away from the Congress, holding that their interests lay in loyalty to the government and separate representation. Tyabji answered him directly: he argued that the Congress dealt with questions common to all Indians, and he gave an assurance — which became a working convention — that no resolution objected to by the great majority of any community’s delegates would be pressed.
The other names. Hasrat Mohani, the poet who coined Inquilab Zindabad, was the first to demand complete independence, at the Ahmedabad session of 1921, but never presided over the Congress. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad became the youngest Congress President in 1923, at thirty-five, and presided again from 1940 to 1946 — the longest tenure — but he was not the first Muslim to hold the office. Since exactly one name is right, option 4 cannot apply.
Other firsts worth remembering : Annie Besant was the first woman President, in 1917; Sarojini Naidu the first Indian woman, in 1925; and the first Congress session was held at Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College, Bombay, in December 1885, with 72 delegates.
Hence, the answer is Badruddin Taiyabji.
