Ibn Battuta was a Moroccan traveller from Tangier who reached India in 1333 during the reign of Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq (1325–1351). The Sultan welcomed learned foreigners and appointed him the Qazi (judge) of Delhi, a post he held for several years.
In 1342 the Sultan sent him as his envoy to the Yuan court of China. His travel account, the Rihla, gives a detailed picture of the Tughlaq court, the postal system, cities and society of 14th-century India.
Shihabuddin al-Umari was a Damascus-based Arab scholar who described India in Masalik al-Absar from reports, without holding office in Delhi; Ziauddin Barani was a courtier and historian who wrote Tarikh-i-Firoz Shahi; Shams-i-Siraj Afif was the chronicler of Firoz Shah Tughlaq. None of them was made Qazi of Delhi, so 'None of the above' does not apply either.
