About Phule. With his wife Savitribai Phule he opened in 1848 at Pune what is regarded as the first school for girls run by Indians, and later schools for children of the depressed classes and a home for widows and their children. In 1873, the year of Gulamgiri, he founded the Satyashodhak Samaj — the Society of Truth-Seekers — to conduct marriages and other ceremonies without Brahman priests and without dowry. He was given the title Mahatma in 1888.
His influence. Ambedkar named Phule as one of his three teachers, with the Buddha and Kabir, and the line of thought that runs from Phule through Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur to Ambedkar is the spine of the anti-caste movement in western India.
