The sequence of events. Ramakrishna Paramahansa, the mystic of the Dakshineswar Kali temple, died in 1886, and his young disciples took monastic vows soon after. Narendranath Datta, who took the name Vivekananda, went to the West and addressed the Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893. He returned to India in 1897, and on 1 May 1897, at Calcutta, he founded the Ramakrishna Mission and named it after his master.

What the Mission stands for. Its guiding idea is practical Vedanta: that service to human beings is service to God, expressed in the phrase daridra narayana — God in the poor. Its work is in education, hospitals, and relief during floods, famines and earthquakes, and its motto is Atmano mokshartham jagad hitaya cha, “for one’s own liberation and for the good of the world”.
