Question

Which part of a Vacuum Circuit Breaker (VCB) helps to maintain insulation and protects the breaker from external environmental influences?

The correct answer is

Insulating casing

A Vacuum Circuit Breaker interrupts current inside a sealed vacuum interrupter, but every breaker also needs a body that holds the live components apart and shields them from the surroundings.

The insulating casing is a moulded body of high dielectric material (epoxy resin or porcelain) that encloses the interrupter and operating parts.

Its first job is dielectric: it maintains the required insulation between phases and from each phase to earth, so live metal cannot flash over to the frame.

Its second job is protective: it forms a sealed barrier that keeps out dust, moisture, dirt and other external environmental influences that would otherwise degrade the insulation.

The vacuum interrupter unit only performs the arc quenching inside the vacuum bottle, so it does not provide the external housing.

The trip coil assembly merely releases the latch to open the contacts, and the drive rod assembly only transmits mechanical motion to the moving contact, so neither offers environmental insulation.

Hence, the answer is Insulating casing.
