Which of the following is not associated with Chandragupta Maurya ?
Sanchi
Sanchi is not associated with Chandragupta Maurya — option 2.
| Option | Connection with Chandragupta |
|---|---|
| Susima | A prince of the Mauryan house — son of Bindusara and half-brother of Ashoka, and so Chandragupta’s grandson; a dynastic connection |
| Sanchi | None — the Great Stupa was built by Ashoka in the third century BCE and enlarged under the Shungas and Satavahanas; its gateways are of the first century BCE |
| Junagadh inscription of Rudradaman | Directly connected. The inscription of about 150 CE records that the Sudarshana lake was originally built by Pushyagupta, provincial governor of Chandragupta Maurya, and that conduits were added by Tushaspha under Ashoka |
| Vishnugupta | Another name for Chanakya, also called Kautilya, the minister who placed Chandragupta on the throne |
Why the Junagadh inscription matters so much. It is one of the very few pieces of independent testimony to Mauryan administration, and it comes from four centuries later — a Shaka ruler recording, in the course of describing his own repairs to a dam, who had first built it. It is also the earliest substantial inscription in Sanskrit, at a time when the language of inscriptions was still generally Prakrit.
Why Sanchi belongs to Ashoka. Ashoka is credited with raising the original brick stupa over relics of the Buddha, and with the pillar with its four-lion capital that stands beside it. Sanchi is in Madhya Pradesh, near Vidisha, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nothing in its history reaches back to Chandragupta.
The trap. A candidate may reason that Sanchi is Mauryan and therefore connected. It is Mauryan — but of the third Maurya, not the first, and the question asks specifically about Chandragupta.
Hence, the answer is Sanchi.
