Which of the following does NOT figure among the Five Kingdom Classification proposed by RH Whittaker (1969)?
Euglena
The correct answer is Euglena.
Whittaker's Five Kingdom system was a significant advancement as it addressed some of the limitations of earlier systems by including kingdoms for prokaryotes (Monera), unicellular eukaryotes (Protista), and heterotrophic eukaryotes with absorptive nutrition (Fungi), separate from plants and animals. Modern classification systems often use a six-kingdom model (splitting Monera into Archaea and Bacteria) or domain-based systems (Archaea, Bacteria, Eukarya) which further refine these groupings based on molecular studies. Understanding classification helps in studying biodiversity, evolutionary history, and ecological relationships between organisms.
