The Global Innovation Index (GII) is an annual benchmarking exercise released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialised agency of the United Nations, and it ranks the world's economies on their innovation capacity and performance rather than on income or size alone.

The score is built from two pillars: innovation inputs, which capture institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, market sophistication and business sophistication; and innovation outputs, which measure knowledge and technology outputs and creative outputs.

In the GII 2024 edition, released by WIPO, India was ranked 39th among the 133 economies assessed, marking a fresh improvement from its 40th position in 2023.

India also retained its place as the top-ranked economy in the lower-middle-income group and among the leaders in the Central and Southern Asia region, driven by a large talent pool, rising patent filings and a maturing startup ecosystem.

This continues a long climb from 81st in 2015, reflecting sustained investment in research, digital infrastructure and knowledge-based industries.

The other choices are simply wrong rank figures for 2024: 46th, 19th and 61st do not correspond to India's GII 2024 standing and reflect no official placement for that year.
