Question

What is the primary focus of BIMSTEC?

The correct answer is

Economic and technical cooperation

Economic and technical cooperation is correct.

BIMSTEC stands for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation. It was formed by the Bangkok Declaration of 1997 and today has seven members: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Its secretariat is in Dhaka.

As its name shows, its core purpose is technical and economic cooperation among the Bay of Bengal countries, across sectors such as trade and investment, transport and connectivity, energy, agriculture, security, and people-to-people contact. The BIMSTEC Charter came into force in 2024.

It is not a military alliance, not a space agency and not mainly a cultural exchange body; cultural ties are only one of its many sectors.
