Question

What is the major environmental advantage in using Chitosan - encapsulated nano-urea over conventional urea?

This question was previously asked in
TNPSC Group 1 Prelims 2026 GS Question Paper (27-Sep-2026)
The correct answer is

It drastically reduce ground water contamination caused by nitrate leaching.

Conventional urea dissolves and converts to ammonium and then nitrate very quickly; a large part is not taken up by the crop and is washed down through the soil as nitrate, polluting groundwater.

In chitosan-encapsulated nano-urea, the nitrogen is held inside a biodegradable chitosan coating that releases it slowly, in step with the crop's need.

Because less nitrogen is lost, nitrate leaching into groundwater is cut down sharply and nitrogen use efficiency improves. It does not mainly act on soil pH or drought tolerance, and it lowers rather than speeds up greenhouse gas loss from soil.

Hence, It drastically reduce ground water contamination caused by nitrate leaching..

Important Questions from Nanotechnology

  1. Consider the following statements:

    1. Other than those made by humans, nanoparticles do not exist in nature.

    2. Nanoparticles of some metallic oxides are used in the manufacture of some cosmetics.

    3. Nanoparticles of some commercial products which enter the environment are unsafe for humans. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  2. Consider the following statements regarding quantum dots :

    1. A photon's polarization can be * vertical or horizontal, or a super- position of both, and we can use this as a qubit.

    2. Neutral atoms can be trapped at low temperatures using a magneto optical trap, which uses magnetic fields and lasers to cool and trap the atoms.

    3. An electron can be bound to a small semiconductor device, similar to an electron bound to the nucleus of an atom. In these "artificial atoms", the spin of an electron, which can be "spin up" or "spin down", can be used as a qubit.

Which of the above statements is/are correct?
