What is Integrated Farming System? How is it helpful to small and marginal farmers in India?

UPSC CSE 2022 (Prelims) CSAT Previous Year Paper (05-June-2022)

An Integrated Farming System (IFS) is a holistic approach to agriculture that combines different farming enterprises like cropping, animal husbandry, fishery, forestry, and poultry on a single farm. The core principle is synergy: the waste product of one enterprise becomes a valuable input for another, creating a closed, self-sustaining loop. For example, crop residue can be used as animal feed, while animal manure can be used as organic fertilizer for crops, reducing external costs and environmental impact.

This system is particularly helpful for small and marginal farmers in India for several reasons:

  1. Income Enhancement & Stability: IFS provides multiple sources of income. If one enterprise fails due to market fluctuations or weather, the farmer can still rely on income from the others. This diversification acts as a powerful risk mitigation tool.
  2. Year-Round Employment: The combination of different activities ensures that the farmer and their family have productive work throughout the year, unlike seasonal cropping.
  3. Food and Nutritional Security: By producing a variety of products like grains, vegetables, milk, eggs, and fish, the system ensures a balanced and nutritious diet for the farmer's family.
  4. Cost Reduction and Resource Efficiency: The recycling of farm waste as inputs drastically reduces the need for expensive chemical fertilizers and pesticides, lowering the cost of cultivation.
  5. Environmental Sustainability: IFS promotes soil health, conserves water, and maintains biodiversity, making agriculture more resilient and sustainable in the long run.
