Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) is a suite of technologies designed to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from large point sources, such as power plants and heavy industrial facilities. Once captured, the CO2 is compressed and transported. It can then either be utilized to create products like concrete and fuels or be permanently stored deep underground in suitable geological formations.
CCUS plays a potentially crucial role in tackling climate change. It is one of the few viable solutions to decarbonize "hard-to-abate" sectors like cement, steel, and chemicals, where emissions are an inherent part of the production process. CCUS can also enable the production of low-carbon hydrogen from natural gas. Furthermore, when combined with bioenergy or direct air capture, it can achieve negative emissions, actively removing existing CO2 from the atmosphere, a step many scientists believe is necessary to meet climate goals.
