Volcanoes are ruptures in the Earth's crust that allow molten rock, ash, and gases to escape from below the surface. They are a manifestation of the planet's internal heat and dynamic processes.

Causes of Volcanism:

1. Plate Tectonics (Most Common): The movement and interaction of Earth's tectonic plates are the primary drivers of volcanism.
   • Divergent Plate Boundaries: Where plates pull apart (e.g., Mid-Ocean Ridges), magma rises to fill the gap, creating new crust and extensive underwater volcanic systems. This often results in effusive, basaltic eruptions.
   • Convergent Plate Boundaries (Subduction Zones): Where one plate slides beneath another (e.g., Pacific Ring of Fire), the subducting plate melts as it descends, generating magma that rises to form explosive stratovolcanoes on the overriding plate. 
   • Transform Plate Boundaries: While less common, some minor volcanism can occur along these boundaries due to localized stress and fracturing.
2. Hotspots: These are areas where plumes of superheated mantle material rise from deep within the Earth, independent of plate boundaries. As a plate moves over a stationary hotspot, a chain of volcanoes forms (e.g., Hawaiian Islands), with the active volcano located directly above the plume.

Products of Volcanism:

1. Lava Flows: Molten rock that erupts from a volcano and flows across the land surface.
2. Pyroclastic Materials (Tephra): Fragments of rock, ash, and volcanic glass ejected during explosive eruptions.
3. Gases: Water vapor (most abundant), carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and others are released. These can contribute to acid rain, climate change, and pose direct hazards.
4. Lahars: Volcanic mudflows, often triggered by the rapid melting of snow and ice by pyroclastic flows or heavy rainfall on loose volcanic ash.
5. Volcanic Edifices: The structures formed by accumulated volcanic materials.
   • Shield Volcanoes: Broad, gently sloping cones built by successive flows of fluid basaltic lava.
   • Stratovolcanoes (Composite Volcanoes): Steep-sided, conical volcanoes built by alternating layers of lava flows and pyroclastic material.
