Explain different generic type of water and their significance in water supply.

UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Water, in its various geological guises, is fundamental to human existence and water supply. We can broadly classify generic types:

  1. Meteoric Water: Originates from precipitation (rain, snow) and includes surface runoff, stream flow, and shallow groundwater recharge.

    • Significance: This is the primary and most accessible source for domestic, agricultural, and industrial water supply globally, forming rivers, lakes, and replenishable aquifers. It's renewable but highly variable.

  2. Groundwater: Water that resides beneath the Earth's surface in aquifers. While often meteoric in origin, its subsurface storage makes it a distinct supply type.

    • Significance: A critical, often reliable, and less evaporative source than surface water. It's crucial for sustained supply in arid regions and often requires less treatment.

  3. Connate Water: Water trapped in sedimentary rocks during their deposition. It often represents ancient seawater or formation water.

    • Significance: Typically highly saline and unsuitable for direct supply; however, deep connate brines can be sources of minerals, or in specific contexts, subject to desalination. It's also a crucial component of petroleum systems.

  4. Juvenile Water (Magmatic Water): Water derived directly from the Earth's interior (magma) and brought to the surface during volcanic activity.

    • Significance: Contributes minimally to global water supply directly, but is locally important in geothermal systems and contributes to the overall hydrological cycle over geological timescales.
