The primary requirement is progressive, non-coaxial deformation, which involves significant simple shear. In such environments, rocks undergo intense stretching and flow. Existing planar features, like bedding or foliation, are progressively rotated and drawn out parallel to the flow direction. This extreme elongation and differential flow along the shear zone cause initial fold hinge lines to curve and extend dramatically, developing the characteristic sheath-like morphology. High temperatures and pressures, enabling ductile deformation, are also essential for their formation.
