Question

Under which list of the Seventh Schedule to the Indian Constitution do Adoption and Succession fall ?

This question was previously asked in
UPSSSC PET 2026 Question Paper (30-Oct-2026) (Shift-2)
The correct answer is

Concurrent List

The Seventh Schedule divides legislative subjects between the Union and the States through three lists: the Union List, the State List and the Concurrent List.

Entry 5 of the Concurrent List covers marriage and divorce, infants and minors, adoption, wills, intestacy and succession, joint family and partition, for matters where parties were governed by personal law.

Because these subjects are in the Concurrent List, both Parliament and the State Legislatures can make laws on them, with Union law prevailing in case of conflict; residuary powers apply only to subjects not in any list.

Hence, Concurrent List.
