Question

Three of the following number-pairs are alike in some manner and hence form a group. Which number-pair does NOT belong to that group?

(Note: Operations should be performed on whole numbers, without breaking them into digits.)

The correct answer is

14 – 121

The pairs are related as follows:

  • Pair 1: 14–121: Square root of 121 = 11. There is no clear relation between 14 and 11.
  • Pair 2: 21–361: Square root of 361 = 19. Here, 21 is close to 19+2.
  • Pair 3: 18–256: Square root of 256 = 16. Here, 18 is close to 16+2.
  • Pair 4: 11–81: Square root of 81 = 9. Here, 11 is close to 9+2.

Option 1 (14 - 121) is the odd one out because it does not follow the pattern where the first number is +2 more than the square root of the second number.
