Question

Direction : Study the following table and answer the questions that follow :

Number of units produced and sold by six factories (A, B, C, D, E and F) during a year

FactoryUnits ProducedUnits Sold
A400320
B500400
C600450
D700560
E800600
F1000800

The unsold units of factories C and E together constitute what fraction of their combined production ?

This question was previously asked in
UPSSSC PET 2026 Question Paper (01-Nov-2026) (Shift-2)
The correct answer is

\(\frac{1}{4}\)

Unsold units of a factory = units produced − units sold. The fraction is the total unsold divided by the total produced.

Step 1 — Factory C: unsold = 600 − 450 = 150. Factory E: unsold = 800 − 600 = 200. Total unsold = 350.

Step 2 — Combined production of C and E = 600 + 800 = 1400.

Step 3 — Required fraction = \(\frac{350}{1400} = \frac{1}{4}\).

One-fifth would need 280 unsold units, two-sevenths 400 and one-third about 467, none of which matches the table.

\(\frac{1}{4}\) option is correct.
