SSC Selection Post 2025 Graduate Level Question Paper (29-Aug-2025) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

Monogamy was general rule but some princes practiced polygamy

Rigvedic society was patriarchal and the family (kula) was its basic unit. Marriage was regarded as a sacred institution.

Monogamy was the general rule among the Rigvedic people. Polygamy was not common, but it was practised by some kings, princes and chiefs; the hymns contain references to rulers having more than one wife.

So the society was neither strictly monogamous nor did it treat the two forms equally; polygamy was an exception confined mainly to the ruling class.

Hence, the answer is Monogamy was general rule but some princes practiced polygamy.
