The famous Bagh cave paintings are located in the Bagh caves in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, on the banks of the Baghini river. Cut into a sandstone cliff, these Buddhist caves date from around the 4th-6th century CE and are contemporary with the later Ajanta murals.
The murals, executed on a lime-plastered surface with mineral pigments, depict scenes from Jataka tales, court life, dance, music and religious processions. Cave 4, known as Rang Mahal, preserves the finest examples. Odisha, Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh have no comparable Buddhist mural site of the Bagh tradition.
