The Bikaner, Jaipur, Marwar, and Mewar schools all developed in the royal courts of Rajputana (present-day Rajasthan) during the 17th–18th centuries under Rajput patronage. They are collectively classified as Rajput paintings, known for vibrant colours and themes from Hindu epics, mythology, and court life.
Although Rajput paintings are a form of miniature art, "Rajput paintings" is the more specific classification. Madhubani is a folk art from Mithila (Bihar), and cave paintings (e.g., Ajanta) belong to an entirely different ancient tradition.
