Question

The marked price of a cooker is same at four shops I, II, III and IV. Shop I allows two successive discounts of 23% and 92%, shop II allows successive discounts of 88% and 47%, shop III allows successive discounts of 11% and 28% and shop IV allows successive discounts of 63%, 76% and 86% on the marked price of the cooker. Which shop is selling the cooker at the lowest price?

The correct answer is

IV

For successive discounts, the final selling price as a fraction of the marked price is found by multiplying (1 − discount1)(1 − discount2)... for each shop.

Shop I: 0.77 × 0.08 = 0.0616; Shop II: 0.12 × 0.53 = 0.0636; Shop III: 0.89 × 0.72 = 0.6408; Shop IV: 0.37 × 0.24 × 0.14 ≈ 0.01243.

The lowest resulting fraction of the marked price corresponds to the lowest selling price, and Shop IV gives by far the smallest fraction.

Hence, the correct answer is shop IV.
