Question

The following statements are the steps in the catalytic action of an enzyme. Arrange them in correct sequence.

a) The active site of the enzyme, now in close proximity of the substrate, breaks the chemical bonds of the substrate and the new enzyme product complex is formed.

b) The substrate binds tightly to the enzyme, inducing a change in the active site of the enzyme.

c) The enzyme releases the products of the reaction and the free enzyme is ready to bind to another molecule of the substrate.

d) The substrate binds to the active site of the enzyme.

The correct answer is

d, b, a, c

Enzymes catalyse reactions by forming a transient enzyme-substrate complex at their active site. NCERT describes the catalytic cycle as a sequence of four steps.

Step 1 — d) The substrate first binds to the active site of the enzyme, fitting into it.

Step 2 — b) The binding of the substrate induces the enzyme to alter its shape, so the substrate is held more tightly in the active site (induced fit).

Step 3 — a) The active site, now in close proximity of the substrate, breaks its chemical bonds and the new enzyme-product complex is formed.

Step 4 — c) The enzyme releases the products and the free enzyme is ready to bind another molecule of substrate, running the catalytic cycle again.

Any sequence starting with product release or with bond breaking places a later event before substrate binding, and a sequence running d, c, b, a releases products before they are formed, so these orders are impossible.

d, b, a, c option is correct.
