Question

A diploid cell which has 8 chromosomes undergoes meiosis and produces 4 daughter cells. What is the number of chromosomes present in each daughter cell formed at the end of meiosis-I?

The correct answer is

4 chromosomes

Meiosis is a reductional division: a diploid (2n) cell passes through two successive divisions, meiosis I and meiosis II, but its DNA is replicated only once, so four haploid (n) cells result.

Step 1 — The parent cell is diploid with 2n = 8 chromosomes, so n = 4.

Step 2 — In anaphase I the homologous chromosomes separate while the sister chromatids stay joined at the centromere. Each of the two cells formed at the end of meiosis I therefore receives one chromosome of every homologous pair, that is 4 chromosomes (each still made of two chromatids).

Step 3 — Meiosis II is equational: the sister chromatids separate, so the four final cells also carry 4 chromosomes each. The chromosome number is halved only once, in meiosis I.

8 chromosomes would mean no reduction had occurred, while 16 and 32 chromosomes would require doubling of the chromosome number, which never happens in meiosis.

4 chromosomes option is correct.
