The frequency distribution of a research data which is symmetrical in shape similar to a normal distribution but center peak is much higher, is
Leptokurtic
Two different properties of a distribution have to be kept apart here: skewness, which concerns symmetry, and kurtosis, which concerns peakedness.
Skewness measures whether a distribution leans to one side. A skewed distribution is asymmetrical, with one tail longer than the other. The question states that the distribution is symmetrical, so skewed is ruled out immediately - this is the option that tests whether the candidate has read the word symmetrical.
Kurtosis measures how sharply peaked a distribution is relative to the normal curve, and how heavy its tails are. There are three categories.
A mesokurtic distribution has the same degree of peakedness as the normal distribution. The normal curve is itself the reference case, so mesokurtic means neither more nor less peaked than normal.
A leptokurtic distribution is more sharply peaked than the normal curve, with a higher central peak and heavier tails, which means values cluster tightly around the mean while extreme values are more frequent than in a normal distribution. This matches the description exactly: symmetrical, normal in general shape, but with a much higher centre.
A platykurtic distribution is flatter than the normal curve, with a lower, broader peak and thinner tails, so values are spread more evenly.
A helpful way to keep the two extremes apart is the Greek roots: lepto means slender or thin, suggesting a narrow tall peak, while platy means broad or flat, suggesting a wide low one.
Since the distribution described is symmetrical, kurtosis rather than skewness applies, and since the peak is much higher than normal it falls in the leptokurtic category.
Hence the distribution is leptokurtic.
