PPP stands for Point-to-Point Protocol. It is one of the most widely used Data Link Layer (Layer 2) protocols for carrying data over a direct serial link between exactly two nodes — hence the name "point-to-point."

PPP was designed to move multi-protocol datagrams over point-to-point links and provides a complete framework rather than just framing:

• Link Control Protocol (LCP): establishes, configures, tests, and terminates the link, negotiating options such as maximum frame size.
• Network Control Protocols (NCPs): allow PPP to carry many different network-layer protocols (for example IP via IPCP) over the same link.
• Authentication: supports PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) and the more secure challenge-based CHAP.
• Optional error detection, compression, and multilink bundling.

PPP is the backbone of many WAN access technologies — dial-up modems, DSL (as PPPoE/PPPoA), and serial leased lines. It effectively replaced the older SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol), which lacked authentication, error detection, and multi-protocol support.

The distractors are simply invented expansions with no standing in networking. "Private Port Protocol," "Public Packet Protocol," and "Packet Transfer Protocol" are not real protocols, and none matches the established acronym for a Layer-2 WAN link protocol.
