Question

Protection and conservation of forests and wildlife are essential to maintain the earth's health and environment. Forests play a key role in the maintenance of climate, rain-patterns, water and soil conservation.

India has 16 percent of the world's population with only 2.4 percent of its land area. There is much pressure on our natural resources including forests. Due to increasing consumerism and nature- hostile activities, the forest-cover is finishing very fast.

Thousands of snails, frogs, rats, earthworms, cockroaches and other animals are killed for dissection in schools, colleges and laboratories for experiments. This disturbs the ecological balance.

There is mindless destruction of forests for timber, firewood and fuel. Every year there is a loss of about 1.3 lakh hectares of forest area in India because of indiscriminate clearing of forests for cultivation, quarrying and large dams and irrigation projects. Over-grazing has also taken its toll. The result is serious ecological imbalance and environment degradation.

Conservation of forests and wildlife is also important as they make life beautiful and colourful. Their proper protection and conservation also means a continuous and adequate supply of food, fodder, medicines, timber etc.

Our natural resources are under pressure because

The correct answer is

India has 16 percent of the world's population and only 2.4 percent of its land area.

To determine why our natural resources are under pressure, let's analyze the options given:

  1. Option 1: "Other nations are using our natural resources."

This option is not directly related to the overall pressure on natural resources within India. While external factors can influence resource pressure, India's internal dynamics play a more prominent role.

  2. Option 2: "Animals are killed for dissection."

This option addresses a concern regarding the ethical treatment of animals. Although related to wildlife conservation, it does not contribute significantly to the broader issue of natural resource pressure.

  3. Option 3: "India has 16 percent of the world's population and only 2.4 percent of its land area."

This is the correct option. India houses a substantial portion of the world's population, exerting immense pressure on its limited land resources. This demographic factor leads to high demand for resources such as land, water, and forests, intensifying the strain placed on these natural resources.

  4. Option 4: "The government does not care."

While governance can impact resource management, this option is subjective and oversimplifies the complex issue of resource pressure.

In conclusion, option 3 accurately identifies the demographic pressure as the leading cause of strain on natural resources in India.
