On which date is National Handloom Day observed in India?
7 August
National Handloom Day is observed every year on 7 August. It was inaugurated on 7 August 2015, when the first National Handloom Day was launched by the Government of India in Chennai.
The date was chosen for its strong historical significance. It commemorates the Swadeshi Movement, which was formally launched on 7 August 1905 in Calcutta as part of the protest against the partition of Bengal. The Swadeshi Movement urged Indians to boycott foreign goods and revive indigenous industries, giving a major push to home-grown textile and handloom production. Marking Handloom Day on this date therefore links the modern celebration to that early call for self-reliance.
The purpose of the day is to honour India's handloom weavers, to highlight the handloom sector's contribution to the country's cultural heritage and rural economy, and to promote handloom products as a source of livelihood, especially for women and artisans in rural areas.
The other dates belong to different observances and have no connection with handlooms: 5 September is celebrated as Teachers' Day in India, 2 October marks Gandhi Jayanti (and the International Day of Non-Violence), and 18 August is not the recognised date for this event. Hence the correct date is 7 August.
