Question

Location transparency allows :

I. Users to treat the data as if it is done at one location.

II. Programmers to treat the data as if it is at one location.

III. Managers to treat the data as if it is at one location.

Which one of the following is correct ?

This question was previously asked in
UGC NET 2014 Paper 1 Question Paper (28-Dec-2014)
The correct answer is

I and II only

In a distributed database, location transparency means that whoever accesses the data need not know at which site a relation or fragment is physically stored; the DDBMS finds and fetches it.

Statement I is true: end users issue queries as though all the data were held at one place.

Statement II is true: application programmers write programs against the global schema without coding site names, so the programs need not change when data is moved.

Statement III is false: the people who manage the distributed database (database administrators/managers) design fragmentation, allocation and replication, so the distribution is exactly what they must see; transparency is provided for those who use the data, not for those who place it.

Thus only I and II hold.

Hence, the answer is I and II only.
