For example, a secular state might exist in a predominantly mono-religious society without much actual pluralism. Conversely, a religiously plural society might exist under a non-secular (e.g., theocratic) state, albeit with varying degrees of tolerance.

However, in diverse societies like India, secularism becomes vital for managing religious pluralism peacefully. By ensuring equal respect for all faiths, secularism acts as a framework that allows diverse religions to coexist without state interference or discrimination, thereby safeguarding and fostering pluralism. Thus, while not logically necessary in all contexts, they are practically and ethically intertwined in diverse societies.
