Mixer PAN Control Function

The control that determines the amount of signal sent to the right or left channels in a mixer is the PAN control. PAN is short for Panning.

Understanding PAN

• The PAN knob adjusts the stereo balance of a sound source.
• In a stereo setup, setting the PAN control fully to one side sends the entire signal to that respective channel (left or right).
• Centering the PAN control typically sends an equal amount of the signal to both the left and right channels.
• Moving the PAN control gradually shifts the signal's position in the stereo field between left and right.

• Equaliser (EQ): Controls the frequency content (bass, mid, treble) of a signal, not its stereo position.
• Filter: Affects specific frequency ranges, usually for sound shaping or removal, not stereo panning.
• Treble: A specific frequency band adjustment (high frequencies), which is part of equalization, not panning.
