Question

In a DNA molecule, cytosine is 28%. Calculate the percentage of adenine.

The correct answer is

22%

Chargaff's rule: in double-stranded DNA, adenine pairs with thymine and guanine pairs with cytosine, so A = T and G = C, and the four bases together make up 100%.

Step 1 — Cytosine = 28%, so guanine = 28%.

Step 2 — G + C = 28% + 28% = 56%.

Step 3 — A + T = 100% − 56% = 44%.

Step 4 — Because A = T, adenine = 44% ÷ 2 = 22%.

56% is the combined guanine and cytosine content, not adenine. 36% and 18% do not follow from base-pair complementarity: neither value, when doubled and added to 56%, gives 100%.

22% option is correct.
