Question

In a centre code system using consistent hashing with bounded loads, if the load factor is 1.25 and there are 8 servers, what is the maximum number of codes a single server can handle if total codes = 1000?

This question was previously asked in
SSC Selection Post 2025 Graduate Level Question Paper (29-Aug-2025) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

156

Average load per server = Total codes ÷ Servers
= 1000 ÷ 8
= 125

With a load factor of 1.25, a server may hold at most 1.25 times the average:
1.25 × 125 = 156.25

Since codes are whole units, the maximum a server can handle is 156.

Hence, 156.
